Puerto Madryn

Puerto Madryn (Porth Madryn in Welsh) is a deep water port & tourist center located in Chubut. Madryn was founded on the 28th. of July of 1865, date of arrival of 150 Welsh immigrants aboard the Mimosa.madryn

Madryn´s attraction is the fact of being less than 50 km. from the Peninsula de Valdés, a natural sanctuary with a great variety of marine fauna and where whale watching is one of the greatest attractions. There are two piers int he city.

-The Comandante Luis Piedra Buena Dock , built in 1909.

In 1972 the first cruise ship docked at the pier Piedra Buena . Once Almirante Storni Pier started its activities, the Piedra Buena Pier became exclusive for fishing boats. Nowadays it is  opened for cruise docking too.

Its main industry is the ALUAR  (Aluminum Argentino) aluminum plant , was built in the ’70s  made the city to grow dizzily, also the

– Almirante Storni pier  that was built in order to receive raw materials (primarily bauxite)  for the production of aluminium.

There are  several fish processing plants in the city. It is an industrial city, mainly focused on aluminum production, fishing and tourism.

You will be able to practice numerous nautical activities, such as windsurfing and SCUBA diving.

What to see in Madryn:

-Playa El Doradillo: access the beach by gravel road from Puerto Madryn, You will probably see whales at a distance of 10-20 meters (from the beach), very close to shore. From June to December, you can appreciate the southern right whales .doradillo

-Monumento al Indio Tehuelche for having good panoramic views of the city and the gulf (golfo Nuevo)



-Ecocentro: Eco center Great exhibits, nice to hear the whale sounds. Opened from 15 till 20:00 every day except Tuesday’s. There’s a lot of information about the area and the marine wildlife. You should climb to the top of the building for a great view.


-Museo Provincial de Ciencias Naturales y Oceanografico: Natural Science and Oceanographic Museum

-Museo del Desembarco: it is a small museum about the first welsh immigrants who disembarked in Puerto Madryn


-Loberia de Punta Loma: to about 17 kms south of Puerto Madyrn, it is about 20 drive by car to see the sea lions.

Which is the best time to see:

Whales: May to December. The highest gathering is during October.

Sea Elephants: All year long. The breeding season is between December and March.


Punta Loma.

Sea Lions: All year long. Breeding season is the same as the sea elephants’ one. Penguins: October to March. The best season to see them is after November, once the babies are born.

Commerson’s Dolphins: All year long. The best place to see them is at Rawson’s port area.

Dark Dolphins: December to March.

Orcas: January to April and October to December. Note that orcas’ watching is very difficult because their behavior is unpredictable.

Birds in general: All year long. Martinetas, Choiques, Guanacos, Hares and Gray Wolves: All year long

How to get to Puerto Madryn:

From Puerto Madryn to Buenos Aires there are 1,400 kilometers. You can drive bye the National Route 3. or By plane arriving to Trelew, which lies only 67 kilometers away. or to El Tehuelche Airport is located 10 km (6.2 miles) northwest of the city with domestic flights from Buenos Aires.
