Tango- Folklore- Rock Argentina is famous for the tango,you will see people practicing it in the streets. The TANGO is the country’s music symbol.  Numerous shows ( visit a tango show) are available in dinners, cafes ,bars and academies where you  learn how to dance it. You can find couples dancing tango in almost every  the streets of Buenos Aires .It is a extremely sensual dance. It was originated in the late 19th century’s in the poorer areas of the city.

Carlos Gardel

Carlos Gardel is a legendary tango singer.He was born in Toulouse France, at the age of two his mother moved to Argentina, he grew up in the neighborhood of the Abasto marketplace. As an adult however, Gardel applied for Argentine citizenship).He was baptized as “El Zorzal Criollo” (The Criollo Thrush).He died in a plane crash in Medellin, Colombia, in 1935.More on Carlos Gardel can be seen in his Abasto house which is now a museum.

-Astor Piazzola: Born in Mar del Plata in 1921.Piazzolla played with Anibal Troilo’s band until 1944.

At the other hand, the folk music or folklore, is the most representative kind of music in the rest of the country:

Mercedes Sosa: known as La Negra, Haydée Mercedes Sosa was born in Tucumán, in northwestern Argentina, on July 9, 1935.Her career started at the age of 15 . In 2000,she  won a Grammy for Best Folk Album for Misa Criolla, one of Sosa’s best-loved interpretations was Gracias a la Vida. Other of her  famous interpretations :Todo Cambia,La Maza,Solo le Pido a Dios, Hermano Dame la Mano,Cuando Tenga la Tierra, Las Manos de mi Madre She died in 2009.

Atahualpa Yupanqui : considered the most important folklore musician of the country, his Quechua pseudonym  means  “he who comes from a faraway land to tell something.” He was not only a singer, songwriter and guitarist, but also a poet and an author).

Horacio Guarany. Los Nocheros and many more singers contributed greatly to the development of the folklore.Among the first traditional folk groups to record extensively in Argentina, the most influential were from the northwest:

Los Chalchaleros and Los Fronterizos from the Province of Salta. Soledad Pastorutti (La Sole)


Some of the more popular styles of Folklore, performed and danced at folklore parties called peñas, are Chamame, Chacarera, Carnavalito and Malambo. Chacarera is typical in the Northern region of the country, in the Provinces of Santiago del Estero and Tucuman mainly. Carnavalito also comes from the Northern region of the country ( from Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca and Tucumán). It is played with the quena and charango. The Malambo is a typical dance that originated in the Pampas region.


The Rock in Argentina occupies a place of preference with icons like Luis Alberto Spinetta, Gustavo Ceratti (ex Soda Stereo), Fito Paez among a great variety of singers. Gustavo Cerati (11 August 1959 – 4 September 2014) He was an Argentine singer-songwriter, composer and producer. Cerati is considered one of the most important rock singer and a rock legend. His band: Soda Stereo became one of the most important and successful Latin American rock band of all time, its success was unprecedented. Soda Stereo made Rock En Español popular throughout the entire continent. With songs like “Nada Personal” mixed reggae, new wave and ska, “Cuando Pase El Temblor”. Their first tour of Latin America in 1986.The 1988 album Doble Vida produced various hits including “Lo Que Sangra (La Cúpula).”Other album includes Cancion Animal,and Soda Stereo’s best-known song, “De Musica Ligera.” In 2006, the beautiful album Ahi Vamos won Cerati two Latin Grammys, his first. Gustavo Cerati was a pillar of Latin music. He was 55 years old when he died. Charly Garcia born in 1951 is an Argentine singer, songwriter and multiple instrument player. He was part of Sui Generis and Serú Girán. He is considered by critics as one of the most influential rock artists. Andrés Calamaro was born in 1961. He is a famous Argentinean rock musician and song writer. His former band Los Rodríguez was a major success in Spain in the 1990s. Albums : Sin Documentos (1993) and Palabras Más, Palabras Menos (1995). Despite the success the band dissolved by the late 1990s.Many observers soon considered his 1997 solo album Alta Suciedad one of the most important rock albums in Spain, an album that featured now classic tunes such as Flaca and Loco. Two years later, he released the double album Honestidad Brutal (Brutal Honesty). He sold more than 1.3 million albums over his 3 decade career.
